Matted prints offer a simple, refined way to present artwork, photography, and documents with a clean, gallery-style finish. Each print is positioned behind a precision-cut matboard, creating a balanced border that draws the eye inward while giving the artwork space to breathe.

Beyond presentation, the matboard and backing board work together as a system — helping to support the artwork, maintain its shape, and keep it separated from glazing when framed later.

What You Need to Consider

Choose the correct size
Our matboard openings are cut slightly smaller than the stated size to hold the artwork securely in place.
For example, an A4 matboard opening will be cut to approximately 206 × 292 mm, allowing a 2 mm overlap on each side.

Matboard border width
Matboards are cut with a clean, balanced border of 50 mm on the left, right, and top, with a slightly weighted bottom border of 55 mm for visual balance.

External size
The overall (outside) size of the matboard is determined by adding the border width to the opening size.
For example, an A4 (292 × 206 mm landscape) opening will result in an approximate external size of 392 × 311 mm.
This is important to consider when selecting a frame, as the external size is what the frame will need to accommodate.
Custom sizes can also be created upon request — either to match an existing frame or to suit standardised frame sizes.

Colour
Select a matboard colour that complements your artwork. Neutral tones are most commonly used, but the right colour can subtly enhance the overall presentation.

Quality of the matboard
The materials used will influence the long-term condition of your artwork. We offer a range of matboards — from standard acid-free options through to conservation boards — allowing you to choose the level of protection that suits your needs.
