A Thoughtful Approach to Restoration
Damage can occur in many ways. Accidental knocks, broken glass, moisture, smoke, age, transportation or unsuitable storage can all affect both the item itself and the frame protecting it.
Every restoration project begins with a careful assessment. Sometimes the frame is the only part requiring attention. In other situations the artwork, photograph or textile may benefit from specialist conservation treatment before returning to our workshop for reframing.
Rather than assuming one solution suits every project, we assess each piece individually and discuss the options with you before any work begins.
Restoring Frames with Care
Original frames often contribute to the character, history and presentation of the piece they surround.
Where appropriate, we undertake repairs to damaged frames, structural stabilisation, replacement of missing or damaged components and preparation for refinishing or gilding. Retaining and restoring an original frame is often preferable to replacing it entirely, particularly where it contributes to the overall story of the piece.
Working Alongside Professional Conservators
Some restoration work extends beyond the frame itself.
Over many years we’ve built trusted relationships with experienced conservators who specialise in paintings, works on paper, photographs, textiles and other historic materials. When required, we’re happy to coordinate this process, ensuring the restoration and reframing are carefully considered together.
This collaborative approach allows every part of the project to be undertaken by the people best equipped for the task.
Completing the Journey
Once restoration or conservation work has been completed, we carefully reassemble and reframe the piece using materials and methods appropriate to the project.
The goal is not simply to repair what has been damaged, but to return the piece to a presentation that can once again be appreciated and enjoyed for many years to come.
Not Local?
We regularly assist customers throughout New Zealand.
Many restoration projects begin with photographs and an initial discussion before arrangements are made for the item to be safely delivered to our Palmerston North workshop or, where appropriate, directly to the conservator.
