Oval Portraits, Convex Glass & Antique Frames Van Uffelen Frame

Caring for Family Heirlooms with Respect

Many New Zealand families own antique oval portraits, memorial photographs and family images displayed within decorative frames and protected by convex glass, often known as bubble glass.

These distinctive displays were especially popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and are often passed from one generation to the next. Over time, convex glass may become broken or missing, backing materials can deteriorate and frames may suffer the effects of age, handling and time.

At Van Uffelen Gallery & Picture Framing, we regularly assist families with the reframing, repair and long-term care of antique oval portraits, convex glass displays and traditional antique frames.

Family Heirlooms Worth Preserving

Many convex glass portraits depict relatives whose names and stories may otherwise be lost with time.

While these pieces often have little commercial value, their sentimental and historical significance can be immense. Whether your portrait requires replacement convex glass, frame repairs or complete reframing, we’re happy to discuss the most appropriate solution for your particular piece.

Convex Glass Specialists

Replacement convex glass has become increasingly difficult to source, particularly for older and uncommon frame sizes.

We regularly supply replacement convex glass and work with traditional oval frames to help retain the original appearance of these distinctive portrait displays wherever practical.

Whether your frame requires new glass, updated backing materials or sympathetic reframing, we’ll recommend the most appropriate solution for your individual piece.
