Respectful, Individual Design
Every culturally significant item is different.
Some pieces are deeply personal family heirlooms. Others carry spiritual, historical or cultural importance. Many are handcrafted using natural materials that require careful support and conservation-conscious framing methods.
Rather than applying a standard solution, we work with you to create a presentation that respects both the object and the story behind it.
Items We Regularly Frame
Korowai • Patu • Tapa Cloth • Waka Paddles • Tukutuku Panels • Kete • Papyrus Artworks • Bark Paintings • Painted Textiles • Woven Artworks • Ceremonial Objects • Indigenous Artworks • Travel-Collected Cultural Pieces • Historic Textiles
Every project is individually assessed according to its materials, structure, age and significance.
Conservation-Conscious Framing
Many cultural objects are particularly sensitive to light, humidity and unsuitable framing materials.
Where appropriate, we may incorporate:
Archival Materials • UV-Filtering Glass & Acrylic • Textile-Safe Mounting • Shadow Box Framing • Deep Rebated Frames • Reversible Mounting Methods • Museum-Quality Framing • Custom Support Systems
Our aim is always to protect both the physical integrity and the cultural significance of the item wherever possible.
Designed with Respect
Good framing should never compete with the object itself.
Frame design, colours, background materials, spacing and depth are all carefully considered so the finished presentation feels calm, balanced and appropriate to the significance of the piece.
Every project is developed collaboratively, ensuring the finished display reflects both the character of the item and the wishes of its owner.
Working With Us Remotely
Many of our customers live outside the Manawatū region and work with us entirely remotely. We regularly assist clients throughout New Zealand using email, phone and video consultations, together with carefully planned courier collection and delivery where appropriate.
If you’re unsure about transporting a culturally significant item, we’re always happy to discuss the most suitable options before any arrangements are made.
Trusted Since 1985
Since 1985, Van Uffelen Gallery & Picture Framing has helped families, collectors, institutions and community organisations preserve and respectfully display culturally significant and meaningful objects.
Every project is approached with care, consultation and an appreciation that these items often represent far more than their physical form.
